A chart that is copied to a new worksheet continues to refer to the data on the original worksheet in Excel 2007

Symptoms

You try to copy a worksheet that contains a chart to a new worksheet in the same workbook in Microsoft Office Excel 2007. When you do this, the chart that was copied to the new worksheet continues to refer to the data on the original worksheet instead of to the data on the new worksheet.

Cause

This problem occurs because the worksheet name is always included in the series references in a chart. When the worksheet is copied to a new worksheet, a worksheet name conflict occurs.

Workaround

  1. Right click on the Chart.
  2. Go to Select Data.
  3. Click on the handle at the end of the Chart Data range field.
  4. Browse to the data on the sheet.
  5. Select the data
  6. Click on the handle again, and then click on OK.
