You cannot select the Automatic option when you try to change the gridline color of a chart in Microsoft Office Excel 2007

Symptoms

You open a file that contains gridlines in Microsoft Office Excel 2007, and you try to change the gridline color under Line Color in the Format Major Gridlines dialog box. However, you cannot select the Automatic option, and the Line Color setting reverts back to the Solid Line setting.

Workaround

To work around this problem, you can change the border color to automatic by using the Format Shape dialog box in Excel 2007. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click the chart in Excel 2007.
  2. Under Chart Tools, click Format.
  3. Next to Shape Styles, click Format Shape.
  4. In the Format Axis dialog box, click Line Color, click Automatic, and then click Close.
