Deleting or modifying rows that are above and below a hidden row in a filtered Excel 2007 worksheet also deletes or modifies the hidden row

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

In Microsoft Office Excel 2007, you apply a filter to a worksheet by selecting the header to hide a row. This worksheet has not been saved. If you then delete or modify the rows in the worksheet that are above and below the hidden row, the hidden row is also deleted or modified. This issue occurs when you select only the range headers, and then you turn on AutoFilters.

This issue occurs in the following scenarios after you filter the data by selecting the range headers:
  • Row deletion: Deleting the selected range would delete the hidden rows between this range.
  • Fill: Filling data in the selected range would fill even the hidden rows between this range.
  • Copy/Paste: Copying and then pasting the range of cells will paste even the hidden rows.
  • Formatting: Formatting the selected range would format the hidden rows also.

Workaround

To work around this issue after you apply the filter, save the workbook, and then close and reopen the workbook.

Additionally, instead of selecting only the range header and turning on AutoFilter, select the whole range or any one cell within the range, and then turn on AutoFilters.
