You receive an error message when you start Windows Vista after you install an ATM network adapter

Symptoms

After you install an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network adapter, you receive the following error message when you start Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008:
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device.

Cause

This behavior occurs because ATM is not supported in Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

More information

Because Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 do not support ATM, the following features are not part of these operating systems:
  • Classical IP over ATM (CIP)
  • ATM Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) server
  • Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over ATM
  • Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM
  • Winsock over ATM
