The text effect in a SmartArt graphic appears grainy when you save a presentation or when you paste a SmartArt graphic in a 2007 Office program

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, you save a presentation as a picture. The presentation contains a SmartArt graphic. Or, you paste a SmartArt graphic as a picture in a 2007 Microsoft Office program. The SmartArt graphic has text that contains a text effect, such as one of the following effects:
  • Bevel
  • Glow
  • Reflection
  • Shadow
In this scenario, the text effect appears grainy.

Cause

Cause 1

This behavior occurs in PowerPoint 2007 when you save a presentation by using one of the following options:
  • Windows Metafile (*.wmf)
  • Enhanced Windows Metafile (*.emf)

Cause 2

This behavior also occurs in a 2007 Office program when you paste a SmartArt graphic by using one of the following options:
  • Picture (Windows Metafile)
  • Picture (Enhanced Metafile)

Workaround

Workaround 1

To work around the behavior that is mentioned in Cause 1, save the PowerPoint 2007 presentation by using one of the following options:
  • Device Independent Bitmap (*.bmp)
  • GIF Graphics Interchange Format (*.gif)
  • PNG Portable Network Graphics Format (*.png)
  • JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg)

Workaround 2

To work around the behavior that is mentioned in Cause 2, paste the SmartArt graphic in a 2007 Office program by using one of the following options:
  • Bitmap
  • Picture (GIF)
  • Picture (PNG)
  • Picture (JPEG)
