Symptoms

When you hide or unhide rows in Microsoft Office Excel 2007 or in Microsoft Office Excel 2003, all open workbooks are recalculated. This problem may also occur when you group or ungroup rows, or when you use the Subtotal dialog box and then click OK.

Cause

This problem occurs when the calculation mode is set to Automatic.

In versions of Excel that are earlier than Excel 2003, workbooks are not recalculated when you hide and unhide rows. This change was made in Excel 2003 to improve support for the SUBTOTAL function. Excel 2003 recalculates workbooks in case dependent subtotals exist.

Note This recalculation does not occur when you hide and unhide columns.

Workaround

To work around this problem, set the calculation mode to Manual. To do this, follow these steps.

Excel 2007
  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, click Excel Options, and then click Formulas.
  2. In the Calculation options area, change the Workbook Calculation mode to Manual, and then click OK.
Excel 2003
  1. Click Options on the Tools menu.
  2. In the Options dialog box, click the Calculation tab.
  3. In the Calculation area, click Manual, and then click OK.
Note When you set the calculation mode to Manual, formulas are not recalculated automatically. This may cause the formulas to appear incorrect. To recalculate the formulas, press F9.
