Symptoms

When you try to install a new Site Replication Service on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000 Server, you experience all the following symptoms:
The progress bar in the Creating Site Replication Service dialog box stops responding (hangs) for many minutes. This behavior occurs after you type the Exchange service account password in the Site Replication Service logon dialog box and then click OK.
You receive the following error message:
A connection could not be made to the remote directory service, possibly due to network failure. Be sure that both directory services are running and that your network is available, and then try connecting again.

Cause

These problems occur if you type an incorrect password for the Exchange service account in the Site Replication Service logon dialog box when you install the Site Replication Service. When you install the Site Replication Service, Exchange does not verify the Exchange service account password before Exchange writes this password to the administrative group. Therefore, Exchange may write an incorrect Exchange service account password to the administrative group.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, reset the Exchange service account password for the administrative group. To do this, follow these steps:
1.Start the Exchange System Manager tool.
2.Expand Administrative Groups, right-click the administrative group that you want to correct the Exchange service account password for, and then click Properties.
3.On the General tab, click Modify.
4.Type the correct Exchange service account password in both the Password box and in the Confirm password box, and then click OK two times.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More information

When this problem occurs, other Site Replication Services in the administrative group may stop responding because of the incorrect password that Exchange sets. Additionally, if password policies are configured to lock out user accounts after a particular number of failed logon attempts, the Exchange service account may be locked out. In this scenario, all Exchange Server 5.5 services that use this account may unexpectedly quit.
