You may receive an error message when you try to use WebDAV to upload files to Web site that is hosted on IIS 6.0

Symptoms

When you try to use WebDAV to upload a file to a Web site, and the Web site is hosted on a server that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0 (IIS), you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
HTTP Error 404 File or directory not found
Additionally, an error message that is similar to the following may be logged in the W3SVC log:

404.2 Denied due to lockdown policy

Cause

This issue occurs if you enable Microsoft Windows on Windows 64 (WOW64) compatibility for a 32-bit Web application on a 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

Workaround

To work around this issue, add the Httpext.dll file to the Web service extensions list. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand the name of the computer that you want, and then click Web Service Extensions.
  3. Click Add a new Web service extension.
  4. In the Extension name box, type a name for the extension.
  5. Click Add, type %windir%\SysWow64\inetsrv\httpextdll, and then click OK.

    Note %windir% is the location where Windows Server 2003 is installed
  6. Click to select the Set extension status to Allowed check box, and then click OK.
