Symptoms

When you try to create an On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) cube-based PivotTable in Microsoft Office Excel 2007 or in Microsoft Office Excel 2003 with the OLAP Cube Wizard, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Client safety options do not allow pass through statements to be issued to the data source.
You receive this error message if you complete the following steps when you create the OLAP cube-based PivotTable in Excel:
  • You select one of the following options in step 3 of 3 in the OLAP Cube Wizard:
    • Rebuild the cube every time the report is opened, and retrieve the data for the cube only when needed.
    • Rebuild the cube every time the report is opened, and retrieve all data for the cube at once.
  • You clicked Finish in step 3 of 3 of the PivotTable and PivotChart Wizard.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a security setting in OLAP access that only allows for connections to trusted resources.

This setting has no user interface.

Workaround

Warning This workaround may make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this issue, you must set the OLAPUDFSecurity registry entry to 1. If you set the OLAPUDFSecurity registry entry to 1, the safety feature in OLAP is disabled. However, the safety features of Excel remain.

When you establish a connection for any OLAP PivotTable, Excel will prompt you with a message that warns you that you should only continue if you trust the owner of the resource.

To set the OLAPUDFSecurity registry entry to 1, follow these steps:
  1. Exit Excel.
  2. Click Start, click Run, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:

    Excel 2007
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Options
    Excel 2003
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options
  4. After you select the subkey that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type OLAPUDFSecurity, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click OLAPUDFSecurity, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
