You cannot use the keyboard or the mouse to advance slides or animations in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2004 for Mac

When you use Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2004 for Mac, you cannot use the mouse or the keyboard to start an animation or to advance the slide show.

This problem occurs if the presentation Show type is set to either Browsed by an individual (window) or to Browsed at a kiosk (full screen).

To resolve this problem, you can use one of the following methods to advance slides or to start animations during a slide show.

Method 1: Add action buttons to the slides

This method adds action buttons that let you move to specific slides by using the Hyperlink to setting. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the Insert menu, point to Pictures, and then click Autoshapes.
2. Click Action Buttons, and then click Previous Slide.
   
   The Previous Slide autoshape is the button with the arrow graphic pointing to the left.
3. Draw the autoshape on your slide at the location where you want to have the button positioned.
4. When you finish drawing the autoshape, the Action Settings dialog box appears. The default setting in the Action on click area will be Hyperlink to Previous Slide. At this point, you can change the Hyperlink to setting to advance to a different slide.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 to add the Next Slide action button. In step 2, click the Next Slide autoshape button. The Next Slide is the button with the arrow graphic pointing to the right.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for all the slides in the presentation until all the slides have both action buttons added.

Method 2: Add action buttons to the Slide Master and to the Title Master

This method makes the action buttons visible on every slide automatically. For this method, you use the steps that are in Method 1 for both the Slide Master and for the Title Master.

If you want to omit master slide objects for slides that advance automatically or for slides that do not require action buttons to be visible, such as a slide with a large graphic or chart, omit the master slide objects so that a button is not visible on a slide. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Slide Background on the Format menu.
2. Click to select the Omit background graphics from master check box.
3. Click Apply.

Method 3: Assign an action setting to the slide objects

This method assigns action settings to slide objects or to text, so that you can advance the slide show presentation. To advance the objects or the text in your presentation, click the objects or the text that you assigned the action settings to during the slide show. To assign action settings to slide objects or to text, follow these steps:

1. Select text in a text box or click to select an object on the slide.
2. On the Slide Show menu, click Action Settings.
3. On the Hyperlink to list, select the type of hyperlink behavior that you want to assign to your selected object.
4. Click OK.

To work around this problem when you cannot advance the presentation slide show, you can set the presentation to use the Presented by a speaker (full screen) option. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Slide Show, and then click Set Up Show.
2. Under Show type, click to select Presented by a speaker (full screen).

If the Show type is set to Browsed by an individual (window), the following limitations are in effect for the presentation:

• The presentation appears in a Slide Show window.
• The presentation triggers the next animation that is set to On Click if you use the PAGE DOWN key.
• The presentation resets an animation that is set to On Click if you use the PAGE UP key.
• The presentation advances to the next slide when you use the PAGE DOWN key.
• The presentation reverses to the previous slide when you use the PAGE UP key.
• The presentation changes slides when you move the slider on the Slide Show window scroll bar.
• The presentation triggers the next animation that is set to On Click when you move the slider on the Slide Show window scroll bar.

If the Show type is set to Browsed at a kiosk (full screen), the following limitations are in effect for the presentation:

• Microsoft PowerPoint ignores all mouse clicks and key presses.
• If you press the ESC key, the presentation ends.

To work around the limitations of the Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) mode, you can advance the presentation to the next slide when you use one of the methods that are described in the Resolution section. Additionally, you can use slide timings to automatically advance the presentation.

In the Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) mode, you can click the action buttons or objects that have action settings assigned to them to advance the presentation or to interact with the presentation.

You may have to interact with the presentation to run a macro, play a multimedia file, link to another presentation, or other interaction.

To animate objects in the Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) mode, you must use one of the following Start settings for Custom Animation:

• With Previous
• After Previous

By default, these options will immediately trigger animations on the slide as soon as the slide appears on the screen. If you want to control when the animations trigger, you must set the Timings settings to Effect Option, and then set the option to when you want the animation to occur.
