Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a new user (User A) in the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.
  • You do not enable a mailbox for User A.
  • You grant User A the following permissions to the mailbox of another user (User B):
    • Full mailbox access
    • Read permissions
    • Send As permissions
  • User B is a mailbox-enabled user.
When you log on to a Windows-based computer as User A, you can create a profile for User B. You can send and receive e-mail. However, when you try to download the Offline Address Book on behalf of User B in a Microsoft Exchange Server environment, you may receive the following error messages:
An error occurred while opening the Exchange 2000 offline address book files on the Exchange 2000 server. see your administrator
Microsoft outlook could not download your offline address book. Unable to download the offline address book. The address book could not be accessed.

  1. Start the MFCMapi.exe utility.
  2. Click Session, and then click Logon and Display Store Table.
  3. Choose the profile for User B and the pass credentials for User A.

Note You may have to modify the profile to prompt for credentials if you are not logged on as User A.
  4. Click Public Folders.
  5. In the lower pane, right-click the PR_ADDRBOOK_FOR_LOCAL_SITE_ENTRYID property, and then click Open as Entry ID or Object.
  6. Click OK.
