Symptoms

After you configure public folder replication from a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computer to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer or to a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer, mail-enabled public folders do not appear in the Global Address List. Additionally, the following event appears in the application log in Event Viewer:

Event Source: MSADC
Event Category: Replication
Event ID: 8277
Date: date
Time: time
Type: Warning
User: N/A
Computer: server name
Description: ADC could not replicate distinguished name of public folder to the Active Directory because the object came from the configured Active Directory, yet the ADC cannot find it in Active Directory. This can happen when the ADC is configured to use multiple DC's, and the DC's are out of sync with each other. The ADC will try to re-replicate the object. (Connection Agreement public folder connection agreement name).

Note In this error message, the word "DC's" is a misspelling for the word "DCs."

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the ADC-Global-Names attribute from the Exchange 5.5 directory public folder objects. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Create a new worksheet that contains the following five column headings:
    Collapse this tableExpand this table
    Obj-ClassDirectory NameDisplay NameObj-Dist-NameADC-Global-Names
Save this worksheet as a comma-delimited file, name the file Export.csv, and then store the file in the Exchsrvr\Bin folder on your Exchange 5.5 computer.
  2. Export the directory objects that represent public folders from Exchange 5.5 by using Dsexport.exe. For additional information about how to obtain and use Dsexport.exe, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
185018 How to export public folder directory data to a CSV file
To extract the Exchange public folder directory objects, follow these steps:
    1. Copy Dsexport.exe to the Exchsrvr\Bin folder on your Exchange 5.5 computer.
    2. Start a command prompt, change to the Exchsrvr\Bin directory, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      dsexport /FILE=export.csv /DSA=local Exchange server name /BASEPOINT=/o=organization_name/ou=site_name
      • Replace local Exchange server name with the name of your Exchange 5.5 computer. This entry is case sensitive.
      • Replace organization name with the name of your Exchange organization. This entry is case sensitive.
      • Replace site name with the name of your Exchange site. This entry is case sensitive.
Note This command is one line. It has been wrapped for readability. Additionally, there are no spaces in the entries that follow "BASEPOINT" in this command.
    3. When a message that is similar to the following appears, click OK:
The directory export to file C:\Exchsrvr\Bin\Export.csv is complete.

One warning description was recorded in the system's application event log.

      No errors were encountered.
The Export.csv file contains one line for each public folder in your Exchange site. To export a list of all the public folders from your Exchange organization instead of for one particular site, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      dsexport /FILE=export.csv /DSA=local Exchange server name/BASEPOINT=/o=organization_name /CLASSES=PUBLIC-FOLDER /HIDDEN /SUBTREE
Note This command is one line. It has been wrapped for readability.
  3. Open the Export.csv file by using Microsoft Excel.
  4. In the ADC-Global-Names column, replace the contents of each cell with ~DEL. When you are finished, the worksheet should appear similar to the following:
    Collapse this tableExpand this table
    Obj-ClassDirectory NameDisplay NameObj-Dist-NameADC-Global-Names
    PUBLIC-FOLDERFOLDER1NAME0C8FB05E0C8FB05E0C8FB05EFAE832CD00271BFOLDER1NAME/o=Org-1/ou=Site-1/cn=Recipients/cn=FOLDER1NAME0C8FB05E0C8FB05E0C8FB05EFAE832CD00271B~DEL
    PUBLIC-FOLDERFOLDER2NAME0C8FB05E0C8FB05E0C8FB05EFAE832CD00271CFOLDER2NAME/o=Org-1/ou=Site-1/cn=Recipients/cn=FOLDER2NAME0C8FB05E0C8FB05E0C8FB05EFAE832CD00271C~DEL
  5. Save the changes to the Export.csv file, and then quit Excel.
  6. Stop the Microsoft Active Directory Connector service. To do this, right-click Microsoft Active Directory Connector in the Services tool on the domain controller where this service is installed, and then click Stop.
  7. Import the contents of the Export.csv file to the Exchange 5.5 directory by using Admin.exe. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start a command prompt, and then change to the Exchsrvr\Bin directory.
    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
admin /i export.csv /d local Exchange server name
Note This import command only works if the directory objects for the public folders are in their default location. Their default location is the Recipients container. If you changed the location of the public folder directory objects, use one of the following methods:
      • Follow the steps that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to import the directory objects:
268485 Directory import is unsuccessful when you use a command line
      • Import the directory objects by using the Microsoft Exchange Administrator tool. To do this, follow these steps:
        1. Start the Microsoft Exchange Administrator tool.
        2. On the Tools menu, click Directory Import.
        3. Click Container, click the container where you want to import the directory objects, and then click OK.
        4. Click Import File, click the Export.csv file that you saved, and then click Open.
        5. Under Logging level, click High, and then click Import.
        6. When you receive the following message, click OK:
The directory import from file C:\exchsrvr\bin\Export.csv is complete.

          No errors were encountered.
  8. Start the Microsoft Active Directory Connector service.
