Symptoms

When you configure a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition to host a Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.0 Web application that requires an out-of-process session state mode, such as the SqlServer mode or the StateServer mode, you may receive the following error message:
Out-of-process and SQL session state are not supported in this version of the OS.

Cause

This behavior occurs because the .NET Framework 1.0 Redistributable Package does not support Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.

Resolution

Software update information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.
