"Cannot open PivotTable source file... " error message when you open an Excel workbook

Symptoms

When you open a Microsoft Excel workbook that is located in a Web folder that is located on a computer that is running Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot open PivotTable source file '[filename(x.y).xls]SourceData'
Note In the error message, x.y is the version of the document in the Shadow folder that represents the current version of the checked out document.

Cause

This behavior may occur if you double-click the Excel workbook that is located in the Web folder after the workbook has been checked out. This behavior does not occur if you open the file through the Excel interface or through the SharePoint Portal Web site's document library.

Workaround

To work around this behavior, open the Excel workbook that is located in the Web folder directly in Excel (on the File menu, click Open). Alternatively, you may open it through the SharePoint Portal Web site.
