Increased memory usage in the Inetinfo.exe process if delivery restrictions are set on the SMTP connector in Exchange 2000 Server

Symptoms

In Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, you may find that, in certain situations, memory usage in the Inetinfo.exe process unexpectedly increases. As a result of the increase in memory that is allocated to the Inetinfo.exe process, the server may stop responding.

Cause

This problem may occur if both the following conditions are true:
  • Mail delivery restrictions are configured on the Delivery Restrictions tab of the Simple Mail Protocol Transfer (SMTP) connector.
  • A memory leak condition occurs in Inetinfo.exe when Exchange 2000 Server processes messages that are sent across the SMTP connector.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
