Symptoms

When you store the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server database files (.stm and .edb) and log files in a shared folder on a remote server, event ID error messages with descriptions that are similar to the following descriptions are logged to the application event log:

Error 0xfffffb4d starting Storage Group StorageGroupName on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. MDB failed to start.

Error 0xffffb4d may also appear as JET_ErrDatabaseNotFound or error -1203.

Cause

This issue occurs because Exchange 2000 does not support the storage of streaming database files and log files on a remote server.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Exchange 2000 Server. This problem is corrected in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
