How to publish files and folders to a Web server that has FrontPage Server Extensions installed in FrontPage 2003

This step-by-step article describes how to publish files and folders to a Web server that has FrontPage Server Extensions installed.

Required hardware and software

• A Microsoft Windows server that is running FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions from Microsoft or later, Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, or SharePoint Team Services v1.0 from Microsoft.
  
  To obtain and download the FrontPage Server Extensions, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  Note FrontPage Server Extensions are included with Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
• A computer that has Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 installed.
• An established network or Internet connection to the Web server.

Set the remote Web site properties

1. Open your Web in FrontPage 2003.
2. On the View menu, click Remote Web Site.
3. At the top of the document window, click Remote Web Site Properties.
4. On the Remote Web Site tab, click FrontPage or SharePoint Services under Remote Web server type.
5. In the Remote Web site location box, type the Internet address, including the protocol, of the remote Web site that you want to publish folders and files to. For example, type http://www.example.com, or click Browse to locate the site.
6. Use one of the following methods:
   • To use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), click to select the Encryption connection required (SSL) check box.
     
     To use SSL connections on your Web server, the server must be configured with a security certificate from a recognized certification authority. If the server does not support SSL, click to clear the Encryption connection required (SSL) check box. Otherwise, you will not be able to publish folders and files to the remote Web site. If you are not sure whether your Web site supports SSL, contact your Web server administrator or your Internet service provider (ISP).
   • On the Optimize HTML tab, select the option that you want to remove specific types of code from Web pages as they are being published.
   • On the Publishing tab, select the option that you want to change the default options for publishing.
7. Click OK.

Mark files that you do not want to publish

In the Local Web site pane, right-click each file that you do not want to publish, and then click Don't Publish.

Important If your Web site contains a SharePoint Team Services or Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services document library, a list, or a survey, it is better to author your Web site directly on a server that is running Windows SharePoint Services, as the publishing process does not support SharePoint List Items or Documents.

Publish files and folders to a file system

1. Under the Remote Web site pane, click Local to remote under Publish all changed pages.
2. Click Publish Web site.

Note If you stop the publishing process before it is completed, the files that have already been published will remain on the remote Web site.
