Summary

This step-by-step article describes how to create a collapsible list in Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003. All procedures are performed in an existing Web page.

Create a Collapsible List

  1. In Design view, put the insertion point where you want to create an outline.
  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  3. On the Numbers tab, select the style of numbers or letters that you want to start with, and then click OK.
  4. For each item that you want in the outline, regardless of the level it will occupy in the completed list, type the item and then press ENTER.
  5. When you type the last item, press ENTER two times to end the list.
  6. To put each item on the correct level, do one of the following:
    • To move an item down to the next numbered level, click the item, click the formatting tool bar, and then click Increase Indent two times.

      -or-
    • To format an item as a paragraph on the current level (without bullets or numbering), click the item, and then click Increase Indent one time.

      -or-
    • To move an item up to a previous level, click the item, and then click Decrease Indent as many times as you must so that you move the item to the level that you want.
  7. To apply numbering, apply lettering, or apply bulleted styles to the items at the different levels, right-click an item, and then click List Properties.
  8. Click the Picture Bullets tab, the Plain Bullets tab, or the Numbers tab, click the style that you want to use, and then click OK.

Set the Whole List as Collapsible

To make a list collapsible, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the item that is at the highest level of the list, and then click List Properties.
  2. Click to select the Enable collapsible outlines check box.
  3. If you want the list to be collapsed when the page is first opened in a Web browser, click to select the Initially collapsed check box, and then click OK.
Note If your list contains many items that are on the same level, each of these will be collapsible and all levels below the first level will also be collapsible.

Set Only One Level in the List as Collapsible

To set only one level in the list as collapsible, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the first item that is at the level of the list that you want to make collapsible, and then click List Properties.
  2. Click to select the Enable collapsible outlines check box.
Note If your list contains many items that are on the same level, each of these will be collapsible and all levels below the first level will also be collapsible.

Troubleshooting

To test your collapsible list, save your Web Page, click Preview, and then click the first item in the collapsible list.

Collapsible lists are supported by Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and later and by other Web browsers that support Dynamic HTML.
