A restricted-access Web is a Web site that can be viewed by specific users only. FrontPage 2003 can restrict a whole Web site, but it cannot restrict separate pages, sections, or folders in a Web site.
To set up a restricted-access Web in FrontPage 2003, you must configure the subsite to use unique permissions and then grant access permission to the users who you want to permit access to the subsite. You can restrict access to a root Web. However, restricted-access is typically set up on a subsite that has unique permissions.
A subsite is a Web nested inside another Web. By default, all subsites inherit the same permission settings as their parent Webs. However, you can set unique permissions for subsites. Each subsite can have its own set of permissions that specify who can browse, author, or administer it, and you can set up individual subsites with different levels of permissions and different groups of users.
Use FrontPage to Create a New Subsite
Use one of the following methods to create a subsite in FrontPage 2003.Method 1: Create a Subsite from a Wizard or from a Template
- Click File, and then click New.
- In the New task pane, select and then click the type of Web site that you want to create.
- In the Web Site Templates dialog box, click the template that you want to use.
- In the Specify the location of the new web
list, type a new Web location or select your location from the list of
available choices.
For example, http://server name is a Root Web and http://server name/subsite name is a subsite, and then click OK.
Method 2: Use FrontPage 2003 to Convert a Folder to a Subsite
- Start FrontPage 2003, click File, and then click Open Web.
- In the Look In list, locate the Web that you want to open, and then click Open.
- In the Folder List, right-click the folder
that you want to convert to a subsite, and then click Convert to
Web.
If you receive a message that prompts you to confirm the conversion, click Yes.
Method 3: Use FrontPage 2003 to Import a Web into a Folder and Convert the Folder into a Subsite
- Start FrontPage 2003, click File, and then click Open Web.
- In the Look In list, locate the Web that you want to import the subsite into, and then click Open.
- Click File, and then click Import.
- In the Import dialog box, click Add File, Add Folder, or From Site.
- In the Look In box, locate the folder or Web that you want to import, and then click Open.
- Convert the folder to a subsite by using the steps that are described earlier in this article.

Use the Microsoft Internet Information Services (ISS) Manager to Create a Subsite
Alternatively, you can use the Internet Information Services (IIS) snap-in in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to create a subsite. To do this, use one of the following methods.Method 1: Use the IIS Manager to Create a Restricted-Access Subsite
- Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Expand Your_Server_Name/Web Sites, and then expand the Web site that you want to use.
- Right-click the Web that you want to make a subsite, point to New, and then click Server Extensions 2002 Web.
- On the Create a Subweb page, in the Name box, type a name for your subsite, and then click Submit.
- On the Web site Administration for "Your_Web_Site" page, in the Users and Roles area, click Change subweb permissions.
- Click Use unique permissions for this Web site, and then click Submit.
- Click Administration to return to the
Administration page, and then click Manage
Users.
- To give a user permission to access the subsite, click Add a User.
- On the Add a User page, in the User area, either create a new account or add an existing user account.
- In the User Role area, click to select the role for the user who you are adding, and then click Add User.
- Repeat steps a through c for each user who you want to grant permission to access your restricted access subsite.
- Click Administration to return to the Administration page, and then click Change anonymous access settings.
- On the Change anonymous access settings page, click Off, and then click Submit.
Method 2: Use the IIS Manager to Convert a Folder in a Web to a Restricted-Access Subsite
- Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Expand Your_Server_Name/Web Sites, and then expand the Web site that you want to use.
- Right-click the folder that you want to convert to a FrontPage-extended subsite, point to All Tasks, and then click Configure Server Extensions 2002.
- On the Create a Subweb page, in the Name box, type a name for your subsite, and then click Submit.
- On the Web site Administration for "Your_Web_Site" page, in the Users and Roles area, click Change subweb permissions.
- Click Use unique permissions for this Web site, and then click Submit.
- Click Administration to return to the
Administration page, and then click Manage
Users.
- To give a user permission to access the subsite, click Add a User.
- On the Add a User page, in the User area, either create a new account or add an existing user account.
- In the User Role area, click to select the role for the user who you are adding, and then click Add User.

- Start FrontPage 2003 and then open your subsite.
- Click Tools, point to Server, and then click Permissions.
- On the Permissions Administration page, click Change permissions.
- Click Use unique permissions for this Web site, and then click Submit.
- Click Administration to visit the Web site Administration for "Your_Web_Site"page, and then in the Users and Roles area, click Manage Users.
- To give a user permission to access the subsite, click Add a User.
- On the Add a User page, in the User area, either create a new account or add an existing user account.
- In the User Role area, click to select the role for the user who you are adding, and then click Add User.
- Repeat steps 6 through 8 for each user who you want to grant permission to access your restricted access subsite.
- Click Administration to return to the Administration page, and then click Change anonymous access settings.
- On the Change anonymous access settings page, click Off, and then click Submit.
Method 2: Use FrontPage 2003 to Configure Unique Permissions from the Root Web
- Start FrontPage 2003 and then open the Root Web that contains the subsite.
- Click Tools, point to Server, and then click Administration Home.
- On the Web site Administration for "Your_Web_Site" page, in the Subwebs area click the name of your subsite.
- On the Web site Administration for "Your_Web_Site" page, in the Users and Roles area, click Change subweb permissions.
- Click Use unique permissions for this Web site, and then click Submit.
- Click Administration to return to the Administration page, and then click Manage Users.
- Click to select the check box next to any user name that you want to remove from access to the subsite, and then click Remove selected user(s) from all roles.
- To give a user permission to access the subsite, click Add a User.
- On the Add a User page, in the User area, either create a new account or add an existing user account.
- In the User Role area, click to select the role for the user who you are adding, and then click Add User.
- Repeat steps 7 through 9 for each user who you want to grant permission to access your restricted access subsite.
- Click Administration to return to the Administration page, and then click Change anonymous access settings.
- On the Change anonymous access settings page, click Off, and then click Submit.
Use FrontPage 2003 to Create a Restricted-Access Subsite on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web Site
To create a Windows SharePoint Services subsite, use FrontPage 2003 to create the site and then publish it on a server that is running Windows SharePoint Services. To do this, follow these steps.Create a Windows SharePoint Services Subsite
- Start FrontPage 2003, click File and then click New.
- On the New task pane, click SharePoint Team Site.
- In the Web Site Templates dialog box, click SharePoint Team Site.
- In the Specify the location of the new Web
site box, type the location of your Windows SharePoint Services
server, with the addition of a subsite folder.
Alternatively, you can click Browse, locate your Windows SharePoint Services server, and then add a subsite folder. For example, the location of the subsite may look similar to the following:http://Your_Server/sites/Your_Windows_SharePoint_Services/Your_New_Subsite - Click OK.
Restrict Access to the Windows SharePoint Services Subsite
- Start FrontPage 2003 and then open your Windows SharePoint Services subsite.
- Click Tools, point to Server, and then click Administration Home.
- On the Site Settings page, click Manage permission inheritance.
- On the Manage Permission Inheritance page, click Use unique permissions, and then click OK.
- On the Site Settings page, click Manage Users.
- Click to select the check box next to any user name that you want to remove from access to the subsite, and then click Remove selected user(s) from all roles.
- To give a user permission to access the subsite, click Add a User.
- On the Add a User page, in the Step 1: Choose Users area, type either the e-mail address or user name of the users who you want to add, or type the name of one or more cross site group names.
- In the Step 2: Choose Site Group area, click to select the role for the user or users who you are adding, and then click Next.
- In the Step 3: Confirm Users area, type the requested confirmation information in each box.
- In the Step 4: Send E-mail area, if you want to send an e-mail to inform the users who have been granted access to the site, click to select the Send the following e-mail to let these users know they've been added check box.
- Click Finish.
