Symptoms

When you save an Excel 2002 workbook, Excel may abruptly quit with an Application error.

Cause

This problem may occur if the following conditions exist:
  • You have an ActiveX list box that is linked to Excel cells.
  • You save the file under a new name by using the Save as command on the File menu, or the SaveAs method in Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
This problem may occur if Excel runs housekeeping code that is invoked when certain control events are detected. If this problem occurs during an automatic recalculation cycle of Excel, this causes Excel to crash.

Note If you unload all add-ins, this may allow the save to complete without a crash.
