CDO Send method stops responding indefinitely in Exchange 2000 Server

When you use Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) Messaging to send a message programmatically, the Send() method may stop responding (hang) indefinitely.

This problem may occur if you set the CDO.Configuration.cdoSMTPServerName property to the name of a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server that returns a non-standard SMTP banner.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

Because of file dependencies, this update requires Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (SP3).
