Symptoms

If you add subtotals to the worksheet after you use the Print Preview feature in Excel 2002 and in Excel 2003, it takes longer than you expect before the subtotals are added.

Cause

This problem occurs because after you use Print preview, Excel 2002 or Excel 2003 adds page breaks to the Normal view of the worksheet. If you add subtotals to the worksheet, Excel 2002 or Excel 2003 has to reconfigure the page breaks to fit the subtotals on the page. This process involves interacting with the printer driver to determine the new position for the page breaks.

Workaround

To work around this problem, turn off page breaks in the Normal view for Excel 2002 or for Excel 2003:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Click to clear the Page breaks check box.
  4. Click OK.
Note If you complete these steps, and then save your workbook, the Page breaks setting remains off for this workbook only. If you create or open a new workbook, and the use Print Preview, the Page breaks setting is turned back on.
