DB2OLEDB INSERT and UPDATE Statements May Fail When There Are More Than 84 Columns

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you run a previously prepared SQL statement such as an INSERT command or an UPDATE command and that command specifies more than 84 columns, the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 (DB2OLEDB) may fail with the following error message:
Invalid description. SQLSTATE: HY000, SQLCODE: -290

Cause

The DB2OLEDB provider uses the DDM SQLDTA codepoint to send the column descriptors and the data for the parameters of a previously prepared SQL statement such as an INSERT command or an UPDATE command. The column descriptions are sent in groups of up to 84. If you want to send more than 84 column descriptors, you must send in multiple groups. The DB2OLEDB provider is incorrectly limited to sending only one group of column descriptors in its SQLDTA message. The result is that the DB2OLEDB provider does not send all the column descriptors to the target DB2 system. In this scenario, the target system replies with a DDM DSCINVRM codepoint that is the "Invalid description" message.
