Direct File Access shows hidden shares in Outlook Web Access 2007 (SP1)

Summary

When Direct File Access (DFA) is configured to allow users to access shares on a file server, visible and hidden shares are displayed.

Symptoms

When Direct File Access is enable, the users can view every shares�on a file server that has been allowed by the Exchange administrators. The shares displayed include visible and also hidden shares (hidden shares are shares that contain a $ at the end of the share name).
Normally, hidden shares do not appear in Explorer while using UNC path.

For information, administrative shares (c$, d$, etc.) are not shown by the Direct File Access functionality.

Cause

Direct File Access in Outlook Web Access 2007 (SP1) display all shares on a file server excepted administrative shares.

Resolution

This behavior is by design. You should allow publication of files servers that do not share files with hidden shares to avoid this behavior.
