Symptoms

Backup of�Exchange databases may fail and you may see the following message in backup log "Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group is not a valid drive,�or you do not have access".

Cause

The exact failure cause will be logged in event in Application Event log at the time backup is stopped.
Two known causes are
1. problem with backup target media, not formatted or not having enought free space.
2. trying to perform incremental backup before perfroming at least one full backup.

Resolution

Exact resolution steps depend on the nature of underlaying problem. For specified causes:
1. make sure backup media is formatted. If backup target is disk then make sure it has enough free space to accomodate all data.
2. perform�full backup before trying to do incremental.
