Symptoms

After installation a second Exchange 2000 server into an existingone server Exchange organization there is no mail messages flow from the first server to the new server. Mails are stuck in a SMTP queue for the domain

Cause

This happens because there is a smart-host configured on the SMTP virtual server on the first server. This tells Exchange that all emails should be sent to the smart-host (and in return the smart-host knows that all emails destined for the domain should be sent to the first server). This effectively blocks the first server usersfrom emailing users on the second server.

Resolution

Create a SMTP connector onone of the Exchangeservers andmove the smart-hostconfiguration tothis connector. Configuring this will assure that only emails destined for foreign domains will be sent to the smart-host and that emails destined for local users will go directly to the server hosting the user mailboxes.
