"The property is too long" error when you update the "Department" field of user mailbox in Exchange Server 2013

Symptoms

When you try to update the Department field of user mailbox by Exchange Control Panel (ECP) portal in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 environment, and the length of value is exceeding 64 characters, you receive the following error message:

The property is too long. The maximum length is 64 and the length of the value provided is 80.essage content goes here.

Cause

This behavior is by design. This issue occurs because the length of the Department field is hard defined.

Resolution

To fix this issue, install Cumulative Update 17 or a later cumulative update for Exchange Server 2013.
