IIS 6.0: ASP.NET Is Not Automatically Installed on Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

When you view the Web Server Extensions section of the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on a new installation of Windows Server 2003, Microsoft ASP.NET does not appear in the list of Web server extensions.

When you try to browse ASP.NET content, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following message:
HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found

Cause

ASP.NET is not installed in a default installation of Windows Server 2003.

Resolution

To install and enable ASP.NET:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Add/Remove Windows components.
  4. Double-click Application Server, and then click Details.
  5. Click to select the ASP.NET check box, and then click OK.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Finish.
