Symptoms

If you insert a link to an embedded object in a workbook in Microsoft Excel, you may receive the following error message when you try to save the workbook:
Document not saved.

Cause

This problem occurs when you delete a link to an embedded object, and then insert a new link to the same embedded object. When you delete the original link, Excel cannot complete the deletion process until you close the file. When you create the new link to an embedded object, Excel tries to bind the link to the same embedded object for the second time and causes the workbook to remain in a state that cannot be saved.

Workaround

To work around this problem, delete the link to the embedded object, and then close and reopen the workbook before you try to insert the link again.
