PRB: BizTalk Service Pack Setup Terminates with "Error 1706"

Symptoms

During the BizTalk Server 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installation, a dialog box with the following text is displayed:
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.

Insert the 'Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000' disk and click OK.
If you subsequently click OK, and the original BizTalk Server installation media is not in the CD-ROM drive, a dialog box with the following text is displayed:
The path 'Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000: Disk 1' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'Microsoft BizTalk Server.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000.
After you click OK, and then insert the original BizTalk Server installation CD into your CD-ROM drive, and then click OK on the original dialog box, a dialog box with the following text is displayed:
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000. The Windows installer cannot continue.
After this dialog box is displayed, the BizTalk Server Service pack installation aborts and rolls back.

Cause

If you originally installed BizTalk Server from the CD-ROM installation media, this problem may occur if any media other than the original BizTalk Server installation media is present in the CD-ROM drive when you start the BizTalk Server service pack installation.

If you originally installed BizTalk Server from installation media at another location, and that location is no longer available, you also experience this problem. For example, if you originally installed BizTalk Server from G:\BizTalk, and this location is no longer available, you may experience this problem.

Resolution

If you originally installed BizTalk Server from the CD-ROM installation media, do one of the following before you start the BizTalk Server service pack installation:
  • Remove any media from your CD-ROM drive.

    -or-
  • Insert the original BizTalk Server installation media in your CD-ROM drive.
If you originally installed BizTalk Server from installation media at another location, verify that the original media installation location is available before you start the BizTalk Server service pack installation.

If you receive this error during a service pack installation, abort the installation and re-run Setup after you perform the steps that are outlined in the "Resolution" section.
