Symptoms

When the Forward all messages with unresolved recipients to host option is set on a virtual server, if you send a message to an unknown EX or X500 address similar to the following
[EX:/o=org/ou=AG1/cn=recipients/cn=xxxx]
an event ID 4000 is written to the Application event log with the following error:
Handle file is invalid
Other unresolved messages may also back up in the queue.

An example of this scenario may be when a user replies to an old mail message from another user who has been recreated or migrated, and who no longer has the same legacyExchangeDN or X.500 proxy address.

Cause

The RCPT TO command is not issued to the remote host because the recipient has not been encapsulated in SMTP format.
