How to publish a SharePoint Team Web site from one server to another by using FrontPage 2002

This article describes how to use Microsoft FrontPage 2002 to publish a Web site from a server that is running SharePoint Team Services to another Web server that is running SharePoint Team Services.

Requirements

If you plan to publish a Web site from one Web server that is running SharePoint Team Services to another, note the following considerations:

1. Install Office XP Service Pack 1 on both the FrontPage 2002 client computer and the Web server that is running SharePoint Team Services. For additional information about Office XP Service Pack 1, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

   NOTE: Office XP Service Pack 1 updates both the client and the server.
2. Update only the destination Web server that is running SharePoint Team Services. You do not need to update the source Web server that is running SharePoint Team Services.
3. Microsoft recommends that you have Web Administrator rights on both the source server and destination Web server to complete the procedures described later in this article. With Web Administrator rights, you can view all content on the source Web server and create a new Web site on the destination Web server.
4. FrontPage publishes only the content that you have access to on the source Web site.

Publishing Options

The following publishing options are supported when you install Office XP Service Pack 1 on the client and the server:

• You can use FrontPage 2002 to publish to a new site. If FrontPage 2002 detects that the site name you typed does not currently exist, FrontPage creates the Web site.
• You can publish to a new blank Web site based on SharePoint Team Services. To do this, use SharePoint Administration to create the site ahead of time.

How to Publish a Web Site to a Subweb on Another Server

1. Start FrontPage 2002.
2. On the File menu, click Open Web. Locate and open the source Web site.
3. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
4. In the Publish Destination dialog box, type the location of the destination Web site. For best results, publish to a new subweb that does not already exist. If you publish to an existing subweb on the destination Web server, you may experience Web site corruption or broken views. This is because the site has existing lists that may be affected if you publish to the site.
5. Click OK. If you choose to publish to a subweb that does not already exist, FrontPage prompts you to create a Web at that location. Click OK to create the new Web.
6. If you want to publish nested subwebs, click to select the Include Subwebs check box. Click Publish.
7. After the site is published, you are prompted to view the published site.

How to Publish a Web Site to a Root Web on a New Virtual Server

1. Extend the virtual server on the destination Web server that is running SharePoint Team Services. When you extend the virtual server, use the Site Type option, SharePoint-enabled blank Web site. After you extend the virtual server, use FrontPage 2002 to publish your Web.    A Web site Web server that is running SharePoint Team services has a database, but it does not have the team Web site template. Because the Web is empty, it is ready to receive the content from the source server.
2. Start FrontPage 2002.
3. On the File menu, click Open Web. Locate and open the source Web site.
4. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
5. In the Publish Destination dialog box, type the location of the destination virtual server that you extended in step 1.
6. Click Publish.
7. After the site is published, you are prompted to view the published site.

Known Issues and Limitations

• Publishing over an existing site that has content does not work. Therefore, when you publish a SharePoint team Web site from one Web server to another, publish to a new site.
• The following items are not migrated from the source site to the destination site:
  • Security and permissions settings
  • Discussions and subscriptions
  • Document library templates
• Some ordered fields lose their order.
• Clients older than FrontPage 2002 cannot publish to a Web site on a Web server that is running SharePoint Team Services.
• The Publish option only publishes entire Webs. You cannot use the option to copy a list from one Web site on a Web server that is running SharePoint Team Services to another.
• If you try to publish a list, and you are running FrontPage 2002 on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 2-based computer, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
  
  
  • You receive a "time out" error message.
    
    -or-
  • You are prompted repeatedly to enter your user name and password.
  To resolve this problem, click Windows Update on the Windows Start menu to download and install the latest service pack for Microsoft Internet Explorer.
