FIX: You receive a "digital signature error" error message during the MDAC portion of Visual Studio .NET Setup

During the Windows Components Update portion of Visual Studio .NET Setup, the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) portion of the update fails with the following error message: NOTE: If you are instructed to install MDAC 2.7 by the .NET Framework SDK installation, this behavior and error message may differ, although the information in the "Cause" and "Resolution" sections of this article still applies.

This behavior occurs because of a bug in the process of upgrading from MDAC 2.6 Service Pack 2 (SP2) to MDAC 2.7.

To resolve this issue, run Visual Studio .NET Setup again. Setup should complete successfully this time.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This bug was corrected in Visual Studio .NET (2003) and the .NET Framework 1.1.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP2 contains MDAC 2.6 SP2. Therefore, if SQL Server 2000 SP2 is installed on your computer, this may also trigger the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
