XL2002: Excel Quits Unexpectedly When You Insert Object into the Worksheet

Symptoms

When you attempt to insert an object in Microsoft Excel (click Object on the Insert menu), you receive the following error message
The instruction at address references memory at address.

The memory could not be written
where address is a hexadecimal number such as 0x01D3C839.

When you click OK, Excel quits.

Cause

This problem may occur if too many ActiveX controls are registered. When you attempt to insert an object, Excel enumerates the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry key to obtain the list of possible objects, but the number of registered objects exceeds the limit in Excel.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
