XL2002: Excel Quits Unexpectedly When You Insert Object into the Worksheet

When you attempt to insert an object in Microsoft Excel (click Object on the Insert menu), you receive the following error message where address is a hexadecimal number such as 0x01D3C839.

When you click OK, Excel quits.

This problem may occur if too many ActiveX controls are registered. When you attempt to insert an object, Excel enumerates the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry key to obtain the list of possible objects, but the number of registered objects exceeds the limit in Excel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1.
