Symptoms

When you use Exchange 2000 Server to receive external mail, Exchange 2000 may not deliver the external mail. Event ID 9002 and Event ID 9004 (Categorizer Hard Failure) may occur, and you may receive the following non-delivery message: In Exchange 2000 RTM:
NDR:
Final-Recipient: rfc822;user@company.com
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0
In Exchange 2000 SP1, Exchange 2000 SP2:
NDR:
Final-Recipient: rfc822;user@company.com
Action: failed
Status: 5.3.5

Cause

This behavior can occur if the Internet message format entry is missing or invalid.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, check the Internet message format, which is located under Global Settings in Exchange System Manager. Make sure that there is a Domain=* entry, which is normally present by default.
