"Cannot find Template User object" error when you find contacts that use a consumer domain in Exchange Server 2013

Symptoms

This issue occurs when you run the get-mailcontact cmdlet to retrieve all specified contact information from a consumer domain (such as hotmail.com, live.com, and outlook.com) in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 environment that has Cumulative Update 6 installed. When this issue occurs, you receive the following error message:
Cannot find Template User object.

+ FullyQualifiedErrorId: [Server=ServerName, RequestId=RequestID, TimeStamp=Date/Time] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-ADTransientException] 3CEE4953

Cause

This issue occurs because Exchange Server 2013 is looking for a nonexistent object in a container that is one of the special consumer domains in the on-premises environment.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install Cumulative Update 9 for Exchange Server 2013.
