Windows Phone 8.1 users can install two versions of the Company Portal

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When Windows Phone 8.1 users try to install the Company Portal from the Microsoft Store in enterprises that manage both Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices, they may see the signed version of the Company Portal as an available app in addition to the regular Store version. This can cause Windows Phone 8.1 users to unintentionally install both versions of the Company Portal.

Cause

This issue occurs when Windows Phone is enabled through the Configuration Manager console. In this situation, the signed Company Portal is added to the managed software list just like any other app. Although the signed version of the Company Portal is compatible with both Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1, the Store version of the Company Portal is compatible only with Windows Phone 8.1. This is why only Windows Phone 8.1 users experience this issue.

Resolution

This issue can be resolved by modifying the requirements for the signed Company Portal app deployment to include a Windows Phone 8.0-only rule. For instructions about modifying the requirements for the deployment see step 6 of the following TechNet article:

More Information

After the Microsoft Intune service update that was rolled out in fall of 2014 is installed, a Symantec certificate is no longer required in order to enable enrollment of Windows Phone 8.1 devices. This update also makes the new Company Portal for Windows Phone 8.1 available in the Microsoft Store.

However, many enterprises have already used the Symantec certificate to sign and deploy the Company Portal to their Windows Phone users. In this situation, Windows Phone 8.1 users who install the Company Portal from the Microsoft Store see the signed version of the Company Portal as an available installation option. This makes it possible for Windows Phone 8.1 users to have two versions of the Company Portal on their devices.
