XL2002: Templates in XLStart Folder Do Not Appear in Template Dialog Box

Symptoms

When you click General Templates in the the New Workbook task pane, your custom templates are not available in the Templates dialog box.

Cause

This problem occurs when you place your templates in the XLStart folder.

Workaround

To work around this problem, store your custom templates in the default templates location, and store shared templates in the Workgroup templates location.

Default Templates Location

The default templates location depends on your operating system
Microsoft Windows 98 without user profiles: C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\TemplatesMicrosoft Windows 98 with user profiles: C:\Windows\Profiles\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\TemplatesMicrosoft Windows NT 4.0: C:\Winnt\Profiles\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\TemplatesMicrosoft Windows 2000: C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
where User name is your Microsoft Windows logon name.

Workgroup Templates Location

To set the Workgroup templates location, follow these steps.

NOTE: The path that you want to use for the Workgroup templates location must already exist and be available before you follow these steps.
1.Start Microsoft Word
2.On the Tools menu, click Options.
3.Click the File Locations tab.
4.Under File types, click Workgroup templates, and then click Modify.
5.Type the location for workgroup templates, and then click OK.

More information

In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, you can store custom templates in either the Xlstart folder or the Startup location to have them appear in the New dialog box (click New on the File menu). In Microsoft Excel 2002, custom templates in these folders do not appear in the Templates dialog box (click General Templates on the task pane).
