A restricted-access Web is a Web site that only specific users are allowed to view. FrontPage does not support the restricting of pages, sections, or folders within a Web.
To set up a restricted-access Web in FrontPage, you must set the permissions in the Web to Only registered users have browse access. This is normally done with a subweb that has unique permissions. However, you can also set a root Web to Only registered users have browse access.
A subweb is a Web nested inside another Web. By default, all subwebs inherit the same permission settings as their parent Webs. However, you can establish unique permissions for subwebs. Each subweb can have its own set of permissions that specify who can browse, author, or administer it, and you can set up individual subwebs with different levels of permissions and different groups of users.
The following sets of steps show you how to create a subweb and set unique permissions.
Create a New Subweb
You can create a subweb in FrontPage by using any one of the following methods.Method 1: Create a Subweb from a Wizard or a Template
- On the File menu, point to New, and then click Page or Web.
- In the New Page or Web task pane, click Web Site Templates. In the Web Site Templates dialog box, select a Web layout.
- In the Specify the location of the new web drop-down list, type a new Web location or select your location from the list of available choices.
For example, http://server name is a Root Web and http://server name/subweb name is a subweb.
Note To create a disk-based subweb, type a path location that is similar to the following:C:\my web\subweb nameNotice that you cannot set permissions on the Web until it is published to a server that is running the FrontPage Server Extensions. - Click OK.
Method 2: Convert a Folder to a Subweb
- Start FrontPage, and then open a Web.
- In the Folder List, right-click the folder that you want to convert to a subweb, and then click Convert to Web.
- If you receive a message asking you to confirm the conversion, click Yes.
Method 3: Import a Web into a Folder and Convert the folder into a Subweb
- Start FrontPage, and then open the Web into which you want to import.
- On the File menu, click Import.
- In the Import dialog box, click Add Folder or From Web, and then select the folders or Web that you want to import.
- Convert the folder to a subweb by using the steps that are described in Method 2.

Creating a Subweb by Using the Internet Services Manager
You can also create a subweb by using the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) snap-in in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). To do this, use the method appropriate to your situation.Method 1: Create a Subweb
- Start Internet Services Manager.
- Double-click the Web site that you want to use.
- In the console tree, right-click the Web (or folder) where you want to create a subweb, point to New, and then click Server Extensions 2002 Web.
- When the Create a Subweb page appears in your browser, fill in the name of your new subweb, and then click Submit.
Method 2: Convert a Folder in a Web into a Subweb
- Start Microsoft Internet Services Manager.
- Locate the Web site that you want to use.
- In the console tree, right-click the folder that you want to convert into a FrontPage-extended subweb, point to All Tasks, and then click Configure Server Extensions 2002.
- When the Create a Subweb page appears in your browser, click Submit.
Create a Subweb by Using SharePoint Site Administration
- Start Internet Services Manager.
- Right-click the Microsoft SharePoint Administration Web site, and then click Browse .
- When the Server Administration page appears in your browser, click the Administration link for the appropriate virtual server.
- When the Virtual Server Administration page appears in your browser, click the Go to Site administration link.
- When the Site Administration page loads in your browser, click the Create a subweb link.
- When the Create a Subweb page loads in your browser, type the name of your new subweb, and then click Submit.
Configure Unique Permissions for the Subweb by Using FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions or SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft
If your Web server is running SharePoint Team Services or FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, use one of the following methods.Method 1: From the Subweb
- Start FrontPage, and then open the subweb.
- On the Tools menu, point to Server, and then click Permissions.
- Click Change permissions.
- Click Use unique permissions for this Web site, and then click Submit.
- Click Administration at the top of the page.
- Under Users and Roles, click Manage users.
- In the Manage Users dialog box, click Add a user.
- In the Add a User dialog box, click the appropriate option to add a new user under User, or add an existing user or group name.
- Under User Role, click to select the appropriate check box for the role that you want to assign to the user.
- Click Add User.
- To make this a restricted site, remove the Everyone group's right to browse. To do this, in the Manage Users dialog box, click to select the Everyone check box, and then click Remove selected user(s)from all roles. If you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.
Method 2: From the Root Web
- Start FrontPage, and then open the Root Web.
- On the Tools menu, point to Server, and then click Administrator Home.
- On the Site Administration page, click the name of your subweb under Subwebs to view its Site Administration page.
- Under Users and Roles, click Change subweb permissions.
- Click Use unique permissions for this Web site, and then click Submit.
- Click Administration at the top of the page.
- Under Users and Roles, click Manage users.
- In the Manage Users dialog box, select Everyone under users, and then click Remove selected user(s) from all roles. If you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.
- In the Manage Users dialog box, click Add a user.
- In the Add a User dialog box, click the appropriate option under User to add a new user, or add an existing user or group name.
- Under User Role, click to select the appropriate check box for the role that you want to assign to the user.
- Click Add User.
Using FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
If your Web server is running FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions, follow these steps:- Start FrontPage, and then open your subweb.
- On the Tools menu, point to Server, and then click Permissions.
- Click Use unique permissions for this web, and then click Apply.
- Click the Users tab.
- Click Valid username and password required to browse this web, and then click Add.
- In the Add Users dialog box, select the type of access that you want for the user under Users Can, and then click OK.
- Repeat steps 5 through 7 for each user for whom you want to grant access to your Web.
- To edit permissions for a user, click the user on the list, and then click Edit.
- To remove a user, click the user on the list, and then click Remove.
- Click the Groups tab, and then follow steps 5 through 9 to assign group permissions.
