"Sorry we couldn't load this app" error when you try to open an Access web app

Symptoms

When you try to open a newly created Microsoft Access web app in SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint Online, you may receive the following error message:

Sorry, we couldn't load this app.
We weren't able to load the app's home page. Please let your administrator know about this.

When you try to create an Access web app from an Access 2013 client, you may receive the following error message:

Error: Server was unable to process request. ---> An error has occurred. ---> An error has occurred. ---> There was an error while trying to serialize parameter http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/Access/2010/11/Server/WebServices/AccessServerInternalService/:commandParameter. The InnerException message was 'Object graph for type 'System.Globalization.GregorianCalendarHelper' contains cycles and cannot be serialized if reference tracking is disabled.' Please see InnerException for more details. ---> Object graph for type 'System.Globalization.GregorianCalendarHelper' contains cycles and cannot be serialized if reference tracking is disabled.

Cause

This problem occurs for one of the following reasons: 
  • The calendar format on the SharePoint 2013 site on which you try to create the Access web app is set to a non-Gregorian calendar.
  • The SharePoint user's regional settings are set to a non-Gregorian calendar format.

Resolution


To resolve this issue, set the SharePoint site regional settings calendar to Gregorian, and set the SharePoint user profile calendar to Gregorian.

To check and update the SharePoint site regional settings, follow these steps:
  1. Open the SharePoint site where you want to host the Access web app.
  2. Click the gear icon (settings) in the upper-right corner of the browser window, and then click Site Settings.
  3. Under Site Administration, click Regional Settings.
  4. Set your calendar to Gregorian.

To check and update the SharePoint user settings, follow these steps:
  1. Open the SharePoint site where you want to host the Access web app.
  2. In the drop-down list next to the user's name in the upper-right corner of the browser window, click About Me.
  3. Click edit your profile.
  4. Click the ellipsis button (...) in the Basic Information row.
  5. Click Language and Region.
  6. Set your calendar to Gregorian.
