No option to install Web Folders when you install Internet Explorer 6

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, you don't have the option to install Web Folders as expected.

Notes
  1. Because Internet Explorer 6 installs only the core browser, scripting, and Outlook Express 6.0 files on Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the Install Minimal, or customize your browser option is not available during installation on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Therefore, the Component Options dialog box is not available for you to select individual Internet Explorer components on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
  2. Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (Version 6.00.3790.0000) is included with Windows Server 2003. You can not install a separate version of Internet Explorer 6 on Windows Server 2003.

Cause

This behavior occurs because the Web Folders feature is not included with Internet Explorer 6.

Workaround

If you are running Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Windows 2000, the Web Folders feature is already installed. If you are running Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you can install Web Folders by installing Web Authoring Components with Internet Explorer 5.x, Web Publishing with Microsoft Office 2000, or by upgrading your operating system to Windows 98 Second Edition or later.

Note If you have already installed Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, you need to uninstall it before installing Web Authoring Components with Internet Explorer 5.x.

More information

Web Folders are installed when you install the following:
  • The Web Authoring Components in Internet Explorer 5.x.
  • The Web Publishing or Web Components feature in Microsoft Office 2000 and Office 2002.
  • The following operating systems:
    • Windows 98 SE
    • Windows Me
    • Windows 2000
    • Windows XP
The WebDAV Redirector and Web Folders features are Web-authoring and publishing components. With them, you can manage files on Web servers by using the Windows Explorer, My Computer, or My Network Places interfaces. You can view files and folders on Web servers just as you view files and folders on network servers. However, when you save a file to a Web folder, the file is saved on a Web server, not on your computer's hard disk. The WebDAV Redirector and Web Folders are supported on Web servers that use the FrontPage Server Extensions, Web Extender Client (WEC), and Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) protocols.

For additional information about Web Folders in Office 2000, see the "Using Office with a Web Server" section of the Office 2000 Resource Kit, available at the following Microsoft Web site:
