Outlook cannot open your Exchange mailbox if your legacyExchangeDN attribute contains invalid characters

Symptoms

When this issue occurs, you receive one of the following error messages.

In Microsoft Outlook 2010, you receive the following error message:
Cannot open your default e-mail folders. Microsoft Exchange is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange server is down for maintenance.

In Microsoft Outlook 2013, you receive the following error message:
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. You must connect Exchange with the current profile before you can synchronize your folders with your Outlook data file (.ost).

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove any invalid characters from the legacyExchangeDN attribute of the affected user's Active Directory account.
