FP2000: Error Message When You Install a Web Component That Uses Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions

Symptoms

When you install a Web component that uses Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions, you may receive an error message stating that the component needs FrontPage Server Extensions, or that you are using a disk-based Web.

Cause

Web components that require FrontPage Server Extensions do not work on a disk-based Web.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, update the MTSsetup.dll file, and then reinstall Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Browse the contents of the Microsoft Windows 98 CD, and then double-click the add-ons folder.
  2. Copy the pws folder, and then paste it onto the Microsoft Windows desktop.
  3. Quit all programs, including any anti-virus programs that may be running.
  4. Click the following link to download Mtssetup.exe:The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
  5. Double-click MTssetup.exe, and then click Yes in the Mtssetup.exe dialog box.
  6. In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\PWS, and then click OK. Click Yes if you receive the following message:
    Do you want to overwrite the file:
    c:\windows\desktop\pws\Mtssetup.dll
  7. On the desktop, open the pws folder, and then double-click Setup.exe.
  8. Follow the instructions to install Microsoft Personal Web Server, and then restart the computer.
  9. Start Microsoft FrontPage.
  10. On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair, and then click Start in the Detect and Repair dialog box. Restart the computer when prompted.
  11. Start Microsoft FrontPage.
  12. On the File menu, click Open Web.
  13. In the Open Web dialog box, locate your disk-based Web, and then click Open.
  14. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
  15. In the Publish Web dialog box, type the web destination that you want in the Specify the location to publish your web to box. For example, type http://localhost/myweb.
  16. Click Publish. You receive a message that states, "Web site published successfully." Click Done.
