Symptoms

When you configure the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions in the Internet Services Manager for Windows 2000, the _vti_bin virtual folder is not created.

Cause

This can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You are running a Windows 2000-based server and installed Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • You are using the Internet Services Manager in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to configure the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions.
This only occurs if you remove and configure the extensions in the same MMC session. Also, it occurs every other time that you use the MMC to configure the server extensions for Internet Information Services (IIS).

Workaround

To work around this problem and create the _vti_bin virtual folder, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Run the FrontPager Server Administrator through the Microsoft Management Console

  1. Close the current Internet Services Manager MMC session.
  2. Reopen the Internet Services Manager. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
  3. Remove the server extensions for the Web site:
    1. Right-click the Web site for which you want to remove the server extensions, point to All Tasks, and then click Remove Server Extensions.
    2. If you receive a message about preserving the Web meta-information, click OK.
  4. Close the Internet Services Manager MMC session.
  5. Reopen the Internet Services Manager. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
  6. Reconfigure the server extensions for the Web site:
    1. Right-click the affected Web site, point to All Tasks, and then click Configure Server Extensions.
    2. Follow the instructions in the wizard to configure the extensions. Click Finish to quit the wizard.
