Symptoms

When you install the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions or SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft on multiple Web sites on a Web server running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), an entry for the Fpexedll.dll ISAPI filter is added to each extended site.

Cause

Installing the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions or SharePoint Team Services adds a reference for the Fpexedll.dll ISAPI filter to each Web site. This provides backward-compatibility for older FrontPage clients and allows SharePoint to support backward-compatibility for Office 2000 users of Web discussions and subscriptions. (This filter is not necessary for people using Office XP).

If backward-compatibility is not required, this filter is not necessary and you can remove any references to the Fpexedll.dll filter. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
