Exchange 2013 Workload Management event descriptions aren't displayed in the Application log

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

All workload management events that are logged in the Application log on your computer include a "Description" field. This field incorrectly states that the component that triggered the event is not installed on your local computer or that the installation is corrupted.

Sample Application log entry:
Log Name: Application
Source: MSExchange Workload Management
Event ID: 5
Task Category: (1)
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A

Description:

The description for Event ID 5 from source MSExchange Workload Management cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

Workaround

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Manually update the Workload Management registry entries. To do this, open Registry Editor, and then locate the following registry key:

    System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application
  2. There are two registry subkeys: MSExchange Workload Management and MSExchange WorkloadManagement

Expand MSExchange Workload Management (the subkey that has the space between "Workload" and "Management"), and then modify the following registry entry:
    Value name: EventMessageFile
    Type: Reg_SZ
    Original value: %Exchange Install directory%\bin\res\Microsoft.Exchange.Data.WorkloadManagement.EventLogs.dll

Update this value to: %Exchange Install directory%\bin\res\Microsoft.Exchange.WorkloadManagement.EventLogs.dll
  3. Create the following registry entries:
    Value name: CategoryCount
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 1
    Value name: CategoryMessageFile
    Type: REG_SZ
    Value: %Exchange Install directory%\bin\res\Microsoft.Exchange.WorkloadManagement.EventLogs.dll
    Value name: TypesSupported
    Type:REG_DWORD
    Value: 7
