Symptoms

When you use the Text Import Wizard to import a text file and you type a value of 32,768 or higher in the Start import at row box in step 1, you may receive one of the following error messages:
File not loaded completely.
Integer is not valid.
Note Microsoft Office XP has built-in functionality that you can use to get more information about difficult-to-troubleshoot alerts or error messages. If you want to enable this functionality for this and other error messages in Office XP, please download the Microsoft Office XP Customizable Alerts file from the Microsoft Office Update Web site at the following Microsoft Web site: Note If you reached this article by clicking the Web Info button in an error message, you already have Customizable Alerts enabled.

Cause

The maximum number of rows that you can specify when you use the Text Import Wizard is 32,767. The maximum number of rows in an Excel 2002 worksheet is 65,536. If you open a text file with 65,536 or less rows, all rows of the text file are imported into one worksheet. However, if you try to import more rows than are available in the worksheet, only 65,536 rows of the text file are loaded, and you receive one of the error messages in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

Resolution

If your worksheet contains more than 65,536 but fewer than 98,304 rows, use the Text Import Wizard to import the text file into multiple worksheets:
  1. On the File menu, click Open, click the text file you want to open, and then click OK.
  2. In the Text Import Wizard, type or click 1 in the Start import at row box, and then click Finish.
  3. The first 65,536 rows of the text file are imported into a worksheet, and you receive the "File not loaded completely" error message. Click OK, and then save this workbook.
  4. Repeat step 1. In the Text Import Wizard, click 32,767 in the Start import at row box, and then click Finish.
  5. Note that 65,536 rows of the text file starting at row 32,766 are imported into a worksheet. Save this workbook.
  6. You can delete the first 32,770 rows in this workbook because these rows were also imported into the workbook you saved in step 5. Save this workbook.
If your worksheet contains more than 98,303 rows, perform steps 1 through 6, and then follow these steps:
  1. Open the worksheet that contains more than 98,303 rows.
  2. Delete the first 98,303 rows.
  3. Save the file, and then import the remaining rows by following steps 1 through 6 again.
Repeat this process until you have imported all the rows in your worksheet. Make a back up copy of your file before you delete any text from it.
