Noncritical disk volumes are included incorrectly in the system state backup image when you use the -allCritical option in Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2008 SP2

Symptoms

Assume that you create more than nine disk volumes on a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 SP2. You perform a system state backup operation by running the wbadmin start backup command together with the -allCritical option. In this situation, some noncritical volumes are included incorrectly in the backup image. Additionally, the backup operation might fail.

Additionally, this update fixes the following issue:
When you use Symantec's Backup Exec 2010 R3 to perform backup in Windows Vista SP2 or in Windows Server 2008 SP2, the application intermittently stops responding and the backup job fails.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Automated System Recovery (ASR) writer performs a prefix comparison operation when the ASR writer enumerates the volumes. This behavior causes the ASR writer to incorrectly mark these noncritical volumes as critical volumes.

Hotfix information

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
