Excel 2002 Stops Responding After You Save File in Excel 97-2002 & 5.0/95 Workbook Format

Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel 2002, when you try to save a file in Microsoft Excel 97-2002 & 5.0/95 Workbook format, Excel 2002 stops responding and displays the following error message, and your file is not saved.
Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the error listed at the beginning of this article.

Cause

This behavior occurs when all of the following conditions are true:
  • The file contains a PivotTable.

    -and-
  • The file is password protected.

    -and-
  • You changed the file's encryption type from Weak Encryption (XOR) to either Office 97/2000 Compatible or RC4 since the last time that you saved the file.

Workaround

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Open the encrypted file.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Security tab, and then click Advanced.
  4. In the Encryption Type dialog box, select the encryption type that you want, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK again.
  6. On the File menu, click Save As. In the Save as type list, select Microsoft Excel Workbook (*.xls), and then click Save.
  7. On the File menu, click Save As. In the Save as type list, select Microsoft Excel 97-2002 & 5.0/95 Workbook (*.xls), and then click Save.
