Subject with extended characters sent by OWA may not be readable by Eudora clients

Messages sent with Outlook Web Access (OWA) and Exchange 2000 through SMTP may not been readable by Eudora clients if the subject contains extended characters.

In Exchange 2000, messages with extended characters are encoded with UTF-8, by default. Because some clients on the Internet do not understand this encoding, a feature has been added, documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, to instead use a regional character set. The feature in Q273615 works for Netscape and Microsoft clients, but Eudora clients do not understand the regional character sets.

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.

This fix adds the ability to use ISO-8859-1.

You can turn on this feature by adding the following registry value.
NOTE: You must also have the registry value that is documented in Q273615.

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. Stop the MSExchangeIS service.
3. Stop the W3SVC service.
4. Click Start, and then click Run.
5. In the Open box, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
6. Locate the following key in the registry:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeWEB\OWA
7. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. In Value Name, type UseISO8859-1. In Value data, type 1.
8. Restart the MSExchangeIS service.
9. Restart the W3SVC service.
